Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, about 16 miles east of Oakland and 25 miles east of San Francisco. As of 2020, the population was 70,127. It sits at the junction of I-680 and SR-24 and is served by BART. Neighboring cities include Clayton, Lafayette, Alamo, Pleasant Hill, and Concord.
History
Originally inhabited by Bay Miwok tribes (Saclan, Volvon, Tactan), the area was part of Mexican land grants, including Rancho Arroyo de Las Nueces y Bolbones. Settlement began in 1849, with growth spurred by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1891. Incorporated in 1914, Walnut Creek saw major expansion after the Broadway Plaza shopping center opened in 1951.

Located in the San Ramon and Ygnacio Valleys near Mount Diablo, Walnut Creek covers 19.8 sq mi. It has a warm Mediterranean climate with dry summers, mild winters, and about 26 inches of annual rainfall.
